We thought you might like to see Peter Hammond’s new data released today on sewage discharges outside heavy rainfall conditions – which are shocking.
The Environment Agency (2021) used a definition of “heavy rainfall” unchallenged in a criminal case against Southern Water when it pleaded guilty to unlawful sewage pollution of 25-30 mm rainfall in 24 hrs for sewage spills to be compliant.
Peter Hammond analysed sewage discharge data using the EA’s own definition. As ‘heavy rainfall’ is the EAs proxy for ‘exceptional circumstances’ – the only time legally when sewage can be discharged untreated – then any sewage discharges outside that criteria would be non-compliant.

Overall non-compliance is at a 80-90%!
