We thought you might like to see Peter Hammond’s new data released today on sewage discharges outside heavy rainfall conditions – which are shocking.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The Environment Agency (2021) used a definition of \u201cheavy rainfall\u201d unchallenged in a criminal case against Southern Water when it pleaded guilty to unlawful sewage pollution of 25-30 mm rainfall in 24 hrs for sewage spills to be compliant.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Peter Hammond analysed sewage discharge data using the\u00a0EA’s own definition. As ‘heavy rainfall’ is the EAs proxy for ‘exceptional circumstances’ – the only time legally when sewage can be discharged untreated – then any sewage discharges outside that criteria\u00a0would be non-compliant.<\/div>\n

Overall non-compliance is at a 80-90%!<\/div>\n
