The UK is consistently ranked as one of the worst countries in Europe for water quality,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0a0a0a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">over three quarters of our rivers fail to meet required health standards and face multiple threats.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The poorly maintained sewage system uses Storm Overflows from treatment works, pumping stations and combined sewer overflows from the sewer network (CSO\u2019s) to dump raw sewage into our rivers and lakes. Lack of investment by water companies means the existing infrastructure can\u2019t cope, which leads to the dumping of sewage into our waterways on a regular basis. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Treated and untreated sewage is the greatest threat to river biodiversity and according to research causes more damage than runoff from farms (Ref. the combined effect of treated sewage discharge and land use on rivers; Albini, et.al.). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent (FTSE 100 company) <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Area\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">From Bristol Channel to the Humber,\u00a0and mid-Wales to East Midlands<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Customers\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">4.6 million<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Ofwat bill increase\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>from \u00a3398 to \u00a3583 \u2013 up 47%<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Company\u2019s rejected proposal\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a3612<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>Severn Trent price review 2025\/30<\/u><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">. Ofwat gave Severn Trent a thumbs up overall. It rated its business plan \u201coutstanding\u201d and will be allowed to spend \u00a315bn, up from \u00a38bn over the past five years \u2013 although still 5% below its request. Severn Trent\u2019s investors appeared to welcome Ofwat\u2019s decision: the company\u2019s share price rose by 1.5%, while the broader market fell by 1%.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #4a4a4a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The average annual bill is currently \u00a3398. It will rise to \u00a3583 by 2030, a 47% (\u00a3185) increase. The company had wanted bills to go up to \u00a3612 a year in five years, a 54% increase.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #4a4a4a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Severn Trent Water. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #4d5156;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><u><b> Further information on an \u2018outstanding company\u2019<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent (<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #4a4a4a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">May 2024)<\/span><\/span><b> <\/b><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">has increased the money it pays out to shareholders despite planned hikes to bills and criticism over sewage leaks. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The firm plans to pay shareholders \u00a3300m in dividends after pre-tax profits rose by a fifth to \u00a3201.3m.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_Hlk186877725\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> (November 2024) nearly tripled its profits even as the FTSE 100 water company said it had failed to meet a drinking water risk standard. It\u2019s profits before tax rose to \u00a3192m in the six months to the end of September, nearly triple the \u00a371m it made in the same period last year. The failing in drinking water risk standard relates to the company\u2019s site at Strensham, Worcestershire, Severn Trent said. It added that it expected \u201csignificant improvement\u201d from next year because of \u201cour biggest ever ultraviolet disinfection scheme\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent (<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #4a4a4a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">November 2024) <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">has paid \u00a3600,000 to a charity after human waste polluted a brook over a 1km (0.62-mile) stretch. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">An investigation by the Environment Agency (EA) found an &#8220;overwhelming&#8221; odour and a thick coating of sewage fungus covering the bed of West Meadow Brook, near Whitwick in Leicestershire, in September 2022. The EA said the company failed to operate a nearby pumping station properly, and the issue was not corrected for a few weeks. Severn Trent admitted failings and made an enforcement undertaking (EU) of \u00a3600,000 to the Trent Rivers Trust.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent (<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">October 2024) one of 2<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> of England\u2019s biggest water firms dumped raw sewage into rivers across the country in suspected illegal breaches of their permits, despite being given the highest possible rating by the regulator for their environmental performance, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><i>Observer<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0revealed. <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/severntrent\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>Severn Trent <\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/unitedutilities\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>United Utilities<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0were responsible for 1,374 raw sewage spills from sewage treatment works in apparent breaches of permits over a two-year period in more than 80 watercourses, according to an analysis of previously unpublished operational data. It is alleged the suspected illegal discharges were during dry weather or at times when the plants were not at operating capacity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The two firms were both given the four-star rating by the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/environment-agency\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>Environment Agency<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0this year for their performance in 2023. Over the past five years, the firms have paid out a combined \u00a32.8bn in dividends to shareholders and millions of pounds in bonuses to bosses, with both repeat Its analysis found that\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/severntrent\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>Severn Trent<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0had made 494 suspected illegal spills of sewage in 2021 and 309 in 2022 from 50 sewage plants. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent (<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #4a4a4a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">September 2024) <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">has agreed to pay \u00a3327,500 to restore a waterway after a sewage spill killed the \u201cvast majority\u201d of its aquatic life. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">A blocked sewer polluted a 1.7km (1.05m) stretch of Dimore Brook in Quedgeley, Gloucestershire, in August 2021. An investigation by the Environment Agency (EA) found the incident killed hundreds of sticklebacks, several eels and thousands of insects. Severn Trent said the blockage had been caused by an accumulation of fats, oil and grease \u201cincorrectly disposed of into the sewer by third parties\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/apple.news\/AzADmiYfcRNy3BxiKqXIybw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0084d6;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Water companies<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> (July 2024) across England potentially broke the law thousands of times last year by dumping <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/sewage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #e33a11;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">sewage <\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">without the legally required permits.\u00a0\u00a0An investigation has uncovered for the first time that over 5,500 sewage spills in England last year may have been illegal as they took place without permission from the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/environment-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #e33a11;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Environment Agency<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> (EA) watchdog, including at spots along iconic rivers like the Wye and Avon. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #555555;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> currently has the highest number of outlets without a permit, with 191 unpermitted overflows responsible for 2,245 sewage spills in 2023.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/polluting-water-firms-fines-ban-bonuses-criminal-charges-3174714\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Polluting water firms face &#8216;severe&#8217; fines, ban on bonuses and criminal charges<\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Severn Trent (<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #4a4a4a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">May 2024) <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Liv Garfield <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">has defended her multi-million pound pay package despite sewage spills by the company rising by a third in 2023, she <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141414;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">was awarded \u00a33.2m in pay, bonuses and shares last year, while over the past four years she has earned nearly \u00a313m.
